Molecular Cell Biology
Molecular cell biology involves the use of powerful molecular, biochemical and cell biological techniques that allow the visualization and manipulation of macromolecules and biochemical signalling pathways within living cells and organisms.

Within the Department, these methods are being applied to the study of macromolecule synthesis, protein folding and function, transport of proteins and small molecules within and across membranes, protein-protein interactions, signal transduction, cytoskeletal dynamics and organelle biogenesis. In addition, these approaches are being used to investigate complex cellular processes such as cell-cell interactions, cell movement, cell division and translation control that are important for the proper development of multicellular organisms.

Molecular cell biology will be increasingly important in the years to come, as a means of deciphering the function of the myriad of genes identified in the human genome and the genomes of model organisms.
