Requirement
for a Qualifying Exam for Students registered in the Ph.D.
Program
There are several routes for entry into the Ph.D. program.
You must have a Qualifying Exam if you entered the
Ph.D. program via one of the following routes:
- Entry after completing an M.Sc. in Biochemistry
at the University of Toronto;
- Entry after completing an M.Sc. in a related discipline
at the University of Toronto;
- Entry after completing an M.Sc. in Biochemistry
or in a related discipline at another university;
or
- Direct entry: You were accepted directly into
the Ph.D. program from an Honours B.Sc. program
based on an outstanding academic record and research
potential.
If you registered in the M.Sc. program in the Department
of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto and then
reclassified from the M.Sc. program into the Ph.D. program,
via a transfer exam, you are exempt from a Qualifying
Exam.
You must schedule your Qualifying Exam within 21
months after registering in the Ph.D. program. Prior to
your Qualifying exam you must have completed one session
of BCH2021H and you must have presented one 1/2 hour student
seminar in BCH2022L.
Anyone who
falls into categories 1, 2, 3, or 4 must pass
a Qualifying Exam within 21 months after registering
in the Ph.D. program. Only students who have
entered the Ph.D. program via a transfer exam
are exempt from a Qualifying Exam. |
Note: Once you have
registered in the Ph.D. program, a change in your registration
back to the M.Sc. program must be approved by the Associate
Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
